Our Story

Joyas Mestizas is a non-profit youth folkloric dance group that preserves the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Mexico. Founded in 1988, Joyas works with youth, teaching traditional dances from across Mexico. It is our mission to preserve a connection to Mexican culture in children in the Pacific Northwest through traditional dance, music, and regional costuming. We do this by:

1. Connection to cultural heritage. Dancing in Joyas offers youth a connection to Mexican culture and Spanish language. Many Joyas dancers are Hispanic, but Joyas is open to all, and is an opportunity to share and explore diverse cultural backgrounds.

2. Life skills. Joyas dancers practice for 2+ hours each week, and take part in performances throughout the year. The demanding schedule of practices and performances builds dedication, persistence, and self-esteem.

3. Leadership. As dancers grow, they take on the role of leaders for the younger children, supporting them in practice and sharing advice.

4.Community. Taking part in Joyas Mestizas offers youth a strong sense of community. Dancers feel responsible and accountable to the group, as they depend on each other both on and off-stage.
